The Norwegian Star “Erling Haaland”, the top scorer of Manchester City, entered an unusual judicial path against the Norwegian airline “Norwegian Air Shuttle”, after exploiting his appearance and his well-known hairstyle within a marketing campaign without obtaining his consent.
The “ponytail” hairstyle that Haaland used to appear in is no longer just a sports detail, but has turned into a striking personal mark widely circulated by fans and communication platforms, and exploiting this feature called for legal action when the company decided to install the appearance of his hair on the hull of one of its aircraft in a digital advertisement during the World Cup in order to promote ticket bookings, and although the publication was deleted quickly, the action did not stop the escalation of the issue.
Thomas Hagen, the legal representative of the international striker, explained that the lawsuit is mainly based on the “illegal use of Halland’s trademarks by the Norwegian company in the promotion of air tickets during the football World Cup”.
On the other hand, the airline’s management responded by expressing surprise at this course, considering that resorting to the courts is “regrettable”. The foundation explained in its explanation that it was supporting the national team in a spontaneous spirit, like the fans, inspired by the idea of popular interaction via social networks, without intent to harm.
According to Katarina Soli, the airline’s spokeswoman, the airline is seeking to resolve the dispute through a “rational dialogue”, while the Oslo court has scheduled an official hearing to consider the details of the lawsuit on October 9 to decide on the allegations of exploitation of commercial image rights.
