The survival of the Portuguese technical director “Paulo Sergio” at the head of the technical leadership of Al-Wadad Sports Club is at stake, following the lackluster start recorded by the team at the beginning of its career in the Moroccan professional league, and this faltering start set off a wave of anger among the supporters of the Oval team, whose voices rose to demand urgent intervention and technical change to return the team to the track of victories.
Despite the escalating intensity of these public demands calling for the departure of the Portuguese coach, the friendly administration finds itself handcuffed in front of a significant financial obstacle preventing the decision to immediately dismiss. Termination of the contractual relationship with Sergio and his assistants at this early time of the season will carry heavy financial burdens on the club’s Treasury, forcing the decision-makers inside the Red Castle to wait and calculate the steps accurately to avoid entering into a new financial crisis.
According to informed sources inside the club, the decision to dispense with the services of Paulo Sergio and his support staff will cost the treasury of Al-Wadad sports a huge amount up to about (300 million Moroccan centimes), which is about (274,590 euros), the total value, which includes outstanding dues and the penalty clause stipulated in the contract concluded between the parties.
Such a large figure puts Al-Wadad officials in an unenviable position, as they have to find a difficult equation that balances between absorbing the anger of the stands demanding the head coach, and the need to maintain the club’s financial balance and avoid draining the budget with exorbitant compensatory expenses at the beginning of the football season.
The flare-up of the crisis within the corridors of the club came as a result of the easy waste of points on the Mohammed V compound Stadium in Casablanca during the first and third rounds of competitions, which was not accepted by the friendly fans and considered it a serious indicator that puts major question marks about the ability of the current technical crew to lead the ship and correct the course.
In front of this complicated scene, the president of Al-Wad club, Ibrahim al-Asri, tends to calm down and temporarily renew conditional confidence in the Portuguese coach. The management plan is to give Sergio one last chance during the upcoming fourth round of the championship, in the hope that the team will succeed in achieving a victory that restores confidence to the group, relieves the pressure of the fans, and gives the management additional time to sort out the cards.
