The Referees Committee of the Spanish Football Federation has settled the ongoing debate regarding the identity of the referee for the top match of the tenth round of La Liga, announcing the appointment of international referee “José Luis Martínez Munuera” to officiate the highly anticipated El Clásico between Real Madrid and their traditional rival Barcelona, with “Javier Iglesias” taking charge of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) room.
Monuera, a 44-year-old native of the city of Alicante, enters this summit armed with over 13 seasons of field experience in the Spanish top league, along with holding the international badge since 2015. These atmospheres are not unfamiliar to the Spanish referee, as he prepares to make his fifth appearance in the history of the rivalry’s encounters, amidst great public anticipation for how he will manage one of the most sensitive and tense matches in the world.
The head-to-head record and Madrid’s superiority are clear:
The memory of the Clasico bears the prominent marks of Martínez Munuera, as his whistle has smiled upon Real Madrid on three previous occasions, compared to a single victory for the Blaugrana.
- The beginning was in the 2020-2021 season when Real Madrid triumphed with a score of three goals to one, in a match that sparked widespread controversy after a penalty was awarded to Sergio Ramos following a pull by Clément Lenglet through video review.
- The Catalan team responded strongly the following season, achieving a resounding 4-0 victory in the heart of Santiago Bernabéu Stadium.
- The royal team returned to assert its dominance once again under the same referee, overwhelming Barcelona with four unanswered goals in the second leg of the Copa del Rey semifinals for the 2022-2023 season.
- Real Madrid repeated its dominance in the Spanish Super Cup final for the 2023-2024 season with a resounding victory, settling at four goals to one.
A look at the numbers of both teams with Monuera’s whistle:
On the overall journey of both clubs with this referee, historical statistics indicate a significant advantage for the white-clad team; Real Madrid, under his management, has played 46 matches, winning 30 of them, while nine matches ended in a draw, and they have only tasted defeat on seven occasions.
On the other hand, the Catalan club has good numbers as well, albeit with fewer matches and victories; Barcelona has played 34 matches under Monuera’s whistle, winning 24, drawing six, and losing only four, which puts the referee in a delicate position to maintain calm on the pitch in a match that could early determine the standings.
