The contract race with the Portuguese defender “Thomas Araujo” ignited after his remarkable brilliance in the Benfica shirt, as the player entered the circle of interest of the English League giants, headed by Manchester United and Chelsea, in preparation for a possible move to join him.
This intense interest came after Araujo’s strong performance against Milan in the Europa League, a confrontation during which he won the best player award of the meeting due to his defensive toughness and his superior ability to get the ball out and build play from the back, prompting United and blues scouts to monitor him closely on the field.
The list of those wishing to attract the 24-year-old defender is not limited to the poles of England only, as the player receives constant follow-up from Tottenham, Newcastle and Brighton clubs, especially since he has tactical flexibility that allows him to play in the heart of Defense and right back with the same efficiency.
Despite the desire of English clubs to strengthen their backlines, the resolution of the deal during the winter transfer window looks very complicated. Benfica’s management rushed last month to fortify the player by signing a long-term contract spanning four and a half seasons, with a huge penalty clause of up to (80 million euros).
This move by the Portuguese club’s management, led by coach Marco Silva, aims to close the door to his departure in the middle of the season and retain his main focus, forcing clubs wishing to join him to postpone their contract plans to the summer transfer window or activate the penalty clause in full.
