Tensions have escalated within the corridors of the Manchester City club after a decisive damning decision by an independent commission of the English Premier League, which revealed serious financial violations spanning nine full seasons between 2009 and 2018.
According to the Association, the investigations proved that the club’s officials resorted to entering into fictitious sponsorship contracts in order to inflate financial revenues and reduce expenses by more than GBP 900 million, in addition to providing misleading financial statements and obstructing the course of the investigation by refraining from providing the required cooperation.
In the first strong reaction from a prominent figure who previously led the club, former Manchester City chairman David Bernstein launched a stinging attack on the current leadership, demanding her immediate resignation from her positions, and explained that the survival of the current officials strikes the credibility of the institution in a murder, stressing that if this incident involved a public Joint Stock Company, the abandonment of the post would be inevitable and cannot be discussed.
The city Castle is waiting for a very complicated stage, as the committee has not yet issued the final decision on the expected penalties, at a time when the club was granted a deadline to file an appeal and appeal until the second of next October, and all options remain open for the investigating authorities to sign disciplinary measures that may range from imposing heavy fines, deducting influential points from the team’s balance in the league table, or even issuing a decision to drop to the first division.
