The repercussions of the financial crisis of Manchester City club are no longer limited to the corridors of the English league stadiums and the offices of the professional league, but have turned into a major economic problem that strikes the nerve of investment relations between London and Abu Dhabi.
According to the latest reports from the newspaper “The Telegraph”, the UAE side is seriously considering the option of freezing or withdrawing huge financing plans worth several billion pounds sterling, and these funds were relied on by the British government to launch a high-tech technological complex linking the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge.
This diplomatic and investment shake-up came after the decision of the Independent Investigation Commission to convict the holder of the Premier League title of committing serious financial violations, where he was found guilty of 114 charges out of 115 that had been officially charged against him in 2023, covering a period of financial activity that spanned nine years between 2009 and 2018, and despite the city’s management resorting to appeal and appeal and its insistence on denying all allegations, the shock caused widespread confusion.
Expectations about the upcoming sports sanctions range from the withdrawal of domestic titles won by the club during that period, or a huge deduction of points, to waving the decision of forced relegation and imposing heavy fines, and waiting for the final word to be determined by the remaining litigation stages.
On the political level, these developments put direct pressure on the government of British prime minister Andy Burnham, and the prime minister had remained silent about the reports that talked about the UAE’s lack of desire to inject new financial commitments, content with emphasizing the principle of the rule of law and that the sports system does not grant immunity to any entity, no matter its weight, following previous statements in which Burnham hinted at his fear of the scenario of declining Emirati support and investment.
At the same time, pressure is mounting from within the Premier League clubs and English football officials to close the curtain on this issue without delay, and BBC sources indicate that there is a consensus among football leaders on the need to announce the final verdict before the end of the current season, warning that the continued state of uncertainty casts a heavy shadow on the integrity of the competition after years in which City won titles under the weight of these accusations.
