Mohamed El-Damerdash, a board member of Al Ahly SC, offered candid criticism regarding the negative impact of social media on Egyptian football fans. He emphasized that constant news updates and minor details have burdened supporters, taking away their genuine excitement for the sport.
Speaking on the “Tarikh w Korafia” podcast, he drew a clear comparison between football fandom past and present. He highlighted how Ahly and Zamalek fans once shared the same stadium stands and traded chants during games, only to leave the pitch as friends once the whistle blew. In contrast, the current digital scene has fueled persistent hostility.
He further noted that online pressure has even stripped fans of the simple pleasure of celebrating their team’s victories, as many remain preoccupied with rivalry banter and social media debates.
Concluding his remarks, he stressed that the continuous flow of breaking news, locker-room rumors, and contract disputes does more harm than good, warning that obsessing over endless off-pitch details is slowly destroying the true passion for football.
