Egypt’s national team manager Hossam Hassan addressed the media ahead of their Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against South Sudan, attempting to defuse recent tensions inside the camp. The pressure mounted following a goalless draw against Angola in the group opener, which drew heavy criticism over performance and squad management.
Addressing the notable absences, Hassan explained that concerns over the stadium’s artificial turf prompted the technical staff to rest their star forward to prevent knee issues. He added that the Trabzonspor player will rejoin the national setup right after Tuesday’s match. Regarding the controversy surrounding Al Ahly goalkeeper Mohamed El-Shenawy, Hassan clarified that his earlier remarks were taken out of context, stating that some people focus on trivial matters to make headlines. He reaffirmed his deep respect for the keeper and emphasized that he was only referencing a past phase when the player was returning from a shoulder injury.
The clarifications follow an intense dispute that saw Al Ahly issue an official statement defending their captain, alongside supportive remarks from EFA president Hany Abo Rida. Meanwhile, internal strain escalated over defender Mohamed Abdelmonem, who was reluctant to travel due to the risks of artificial turf following his previous ACL injury. After tense discussions regarding his commitment, the staff eventually permitted him to skip the trip, with plans for him to return ahead of the upcoming friendly against South Africa.
