Recent data issued by the international football federation “FIFA” on the scenes of the last World Cup revealed a dark reality faced by players and referees behind the screens, as the Argentine national team topped the list of teams most targeted by abuse and smear campaigns through social media platforms, in a tournament that witnessed a marked increase in the level of digital intolerance in conjunction with reaching the decisive roles.
The FIFA platform protection service monitored more than 17 million interactions and posts across networks (x, Facebook, TikTok and Instagram), in conjunction with World Mental Health Day, and England, Spain, Brazil and Norway came in advanced ranks behind Argentina, where allegations of arbitral bias and hostility to nationalities fueled the bulk of comments directed against tango dancers.
At the level of individual targeting, the abuse affected stars with racist motives, mostly related to the African origins of the players, with France coming at the forefront of the victims, followed by England, Portugal and Argentina, with cases of composite bullying that combined racial and sexual discrimination without disclosing specific names, and the phenomenon did not stop at the borders of the aggressors, as indicators detected the issuance of waves of intolerance associated with the fans of the Tango team itself, while the European continent topped the scene in terms of the total volume of reports, followed by South America.
Even the referees of the stadiums were not spared from these pressures; they formed the weakest and most dangerous link, as the referees of the matches were subjected to systematic attempts to penetrate their privacy and leak their personal data, accompanied by accusations of complicity and manipulation, which made them the category most vulnerable to direct threats and the most severe impact on their psychological and professional safety throughout the competitions.
