The controversy over the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final has returned to the forefront of the football scene again, coinciding with the expectation of the sports community of the court of Arbitration for Sport ruling in the legal dispute between Morocco and Senegal.
The Belgian “Hugo Broos”, the former coach of the South African national team, entered the crisis line with statements he made to the website “Football365”, confirming the eligibility of the Atlas Lions to be crowned with the continental championship, and based his vision on the laws governing the game, explaining that the exit of the Senegalese team members from the green rectangle before the end of the meeting was categorically imposed to calculate the result defeat by withdrawal, which is the legal procedure to award the title directly to Morocco.
The Belgian coach said in a statement quoted by the website “Football365”: “if you leave the field, it is a defeat by withdrawal.. Morocco deserves the cup, ” Bruce’s proposal is in line with the position adopted by the appeal committee of the Confederation of African football, which decided earlier to cancel Senegal’s victory and consider the team a loser with a score of three goals for nothing, after his players left the field in objection to one of the arbitration decisions.
Despite the clarity of his position in support of Morocco, Bruce directly blamed the management of the African Football Confederation, pointing out that the extreme slowness in processing the file was what further complicated the situation on the Senegalese side, and explained that the imposition of the due punishment required an immediate and quick resolution, rather than extending the periods of dispute that opened the door to a situation of congestion and widespread controversy over the identity of the legitimate champion of the competition.
On the judicial track, attention recently turned to the Swiss city of Lausanne, where on Thursday, October 8, the court of Arbitration for Sport heard the memos and payments of the Moroccan and Senegalese federations as well as representatives of “CAF”, during a closed session examined Senegal’s appeal aimed at canceling the penalty and restoring the title.
