Ibrahim Hassan, the Director of the Egyptian National Team, revealed one of the most difficult humanitarian and medical ordeals experienced by his twin brother, Hossam Hassan, the head coach of the Pharaohs. He confirmed that Hossam miraculously survived a severe heart attack inside the operating room that nearly cost him his life, all while the coaching staff faces fierce criticism and relentless attacks.
Expressing his anger and frustration on his personal Facebook account, Ibrahim wrote:
> “Fear God regarding Egypt. Why do you want to break the joy of good-hearted people and children who have started once again to cherish the jersey, emblem, and colors of their national team’s flag? Ask Egyptian expatriates about their children who were beginning to forget the colors and shape of their country’s flag. Remember the gathering of the people and their joy during and after every match, and remember the worldwide respect for the Egyptian national team.”
He added:
> “Remember Hossam Hassan, who is devoted and loves his country, ‘sacrificing himself’ to bring joy to his nation. Who among us is without mistakes or trials in life? Despite all his private circumstances, he has his work and his country’s name, and he sets everything else aside. Why are we fought like this at every turn? Before every training camp, this fierce war is declared against us.”
He continued:
> “Why the malice from former colleagues with whom we once ate from the same plate and carried the same banner-the flag of Egypt? Why the malice from most journalists, the unjustified war and attacks on every minor and major detail, and the belittling of every success we achieve? Why do we magnify the trivial over the important and forget the principles upon which the Egyptian people were raised?”
He further stated:
> “A piece of advice and a message to colleagues who wish to be in this position: our success-mine and Hossam’s-is what will give you the chance to be here later, so that the decision-maker feels confident from our experience, gives you your chance without fear, and moves away from foreign [coaches]. But if we fail, you won’t get your opportunity. Here is a piece of information I didn’t want to share: Did you know that Hossam suffered a heart attack more than once during camps, matches, and qualifiers, and was saved by defibrillators at the last second? A short time later, he had stents placed, and a month after that, he went back into the operating room while they told me it would take an hour, just to keep me from panicking.”
> “I kept waiting for him to come out of the operating room while they made up excuses so I wouldn’t worry. Thank God he came out, but even then, I couldn’t understand why the procedure took that long. Days later, I went to the hospital for routine tests and coincidentally met the doctor who performed the surgery. He told me, ‘I was hiding the reason for the delay from you; Hossam had a very high chance of not making it out of the operating room alive, because the procedure was on his heart arteries and was extremely complex,’ comparing it to the pressure of the Brazil match. After the surgery, he couldn’t walk or stand, and the situation was difficult because of the cameras and the players, so they wouldn’t notice anything and be negatively affected. I told him to sit down, but he insisted on standing on the sideline.”
> “None of these details were known to anyone, not even my siblings, except for Dr. Mohamed Abou El-Ela and the medical staff at the hospital. Forgive this venting, driven by the sheer ingratitude and wars we-Hossam and I-are facing. But they will never be able to bring us down or stop us, because Egypt is worth this sacrifice from us.”
