FIFA has announced the outcome of its review of the Argentine Football Association’s (AFA) appeal against disciplinary sanctions stemming from the 2026 World Cup final-a match that saw Spain claim its second global title after a narrow 1-0 victory.
According to the Spanish newspaper Marca, citing the official statement, the Appeal Committee partially accepted Argentina’s appeal. The suspension for defender Nahuel Molina was reduced from 7 matches to 4, while his fine was lowered from $90,000 to $60,000.
On the other hand, FIFA maintained a strict stance regarding midfielder Leandro Paredes, rejecting his appeal and upholding his 10-match official suspension alongside a $90,000 fine. The Argentine governing body itself did not escape the penalties; the AFA was slapped with a $321,000 fine, as well as stadium capacity restrictions for upcoming matches, following infractions noted by the Disciplinary Committee during Argentina’s fixtures against Cape Verde, Egypt, Switzerland, England, and Spain.
In light of these developments, the Argentine side is preparing to take the next step in its legal battle. AFA officials announced their intention to request the full, reasoned grounds for the decisions from FIFA, with plans to escalate the entire case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to defend their position and challenge the severity of the sanctions.
