It seems that the chapters of the legendary rivalry between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo refuse to close as their career inside the green rectangle approaches the finish line; after many years of domination over individual awards, in which the Argentine scored 8 golden balls against 5 for the Portuguese, and with their current destinations diverging between the pursuit of the Don for his thousandth goal in Saudi stadiums and Leo’s recent steps in the American League, the challenge between them rears its head again through the gate of the seats of management and sports investment.
This time, the two stars chose the second division league in Spain to be the scene of indirect confrontation, joining the ranks of prominent stars and names who broke into the same field such as Gerard Pique and Pep Guardiola, and the Don began his moves last February with a large financial investment in exchange for a 25% stake in Almeria club, in partnership with the SMC Group, the owner of the largest share, a club with a fan presence and a well-established base with a stadium for about 18 thousand spectators and a previous history in the league of lights.
Messi, on the other hand, preferred a different path with the full acquisition of the Eldense club located in the city of Elda, Valencia. Although the club has only recently moved up to the second division and plays on a modest stadium that cannot accommodate more than six thousand fans, the Association of its historical fans with the Barcelona fans and the team’s wearing the same colors of the traditional belograna was a major motivation behind the interest of Messi, who recently celebrated through his Instagram account the team’s wide victory over Real Oviedo four goals to a goal, pending the completion of official approvals for the deal.
Although ildense’s budget is among the weakest in the competition, the Argentine captain’s wealth, which is close to the billion-pound barrier, is enough to make a major leap in his infrastructure and sporting aspirations. The club welcomed the move in an official statement, saying: “the arrival of one of the most important figures in the history of sports to Spanish professional football as the owner of Eldense marks the beginning of a long-term project, aimed at promoting our sporting, institutional and social development”.
This administrative rivalry is directly reflected in the reality of the confrontations, as the opening round of the current season brought together the two Star teams and ended with the superiority of Almeria with a clean trio, and the confrontation will be renewed on the second of next May. Eldense is not Messi’s first investment experience in Spanish football after previously entering into ownership of the Cornia club, but it poses the biggest challenge that may reopen the door of a historic conflict that everyone thought was over for good.
