The crisis of the departure of “Cristiano Ronaldo” to his country’s national team camp has opened a wide door to legal and sports controversy inside Portugal, after the legal expert and professor of sports law Lucio Correa sharply criticized the ongoing disciplinary proceedings against the Saudi victory leader, describing the expected punishment as not at all in line with the scale of the incident.
According to a report published by the website :SIC Notícias: Portuguese, the disciplinary committee of the Portuguese Football Federation referred the case to the urgent disciplinary track, with a precautionary suspension imposed on the player until the end of the ongoing investigations officially, and the regulations of the Portuguese Federation in force indicate that absence or leaving the national team camp without official permission may result in a suspension ranging from one to six months, in addition to a fine between 500 and 1020 euros.
Despite this, the player’s admission of error and an official apology may reduce the suspension period to between 15 days and three months, knowing that these estimates remain subject to regulations without a final binding verdict yet, Lucio Correa commented on these estimates in a tone of disapproval, saying that the expected punishment is absurd given the seriousness of the act, its sporting value and its public impact.
The most controversial point in Correa’s statements was the imposition of the penalty within the scope of the Portuguese national team only, without applying it to Ronaldo’s participations with his Saudi club Al-Nasr, and the legal expert considered that not suspending the player at the club level is very dangerous and has not been registered before, warning that this sets a negative precedent that affects the fairness of the application of regulations in the future.
On the administrative side, Pedro bruynsa, president of the Portuguese Football Federation, showed a more flexible position; he hinted that he would like to see Ronaldo present with the national team during the international break scheduled for next November, with full assurance that the final decision remains in the hands of independent judicial authorities within the federation, and until the official decision is issued, Ronaldo’s participation with Al Nasr continues to be completely separate from the international precautionary suspension procedures.
