Real Madrid is living the stage of rearranging the cards under the leadership of its Portuguese coach “Jose Mourinho”, who came out in a frank and extensive conversation before facing Villarreal for the eighth round of La Liga competitions.
The Portuguese coach put the dots on the letters regarding the public pressures surrounding the team, providing a comprehensive diagnosis of the reality of the dressing room and how to deal with the decline in the performance of some stars, headed by Vinicius Jr., in addition to the file of absences and haunting injuries.
Mourinho rejected the idea of a quick tactical coup as a solution to crises, stressing that radical changes need enough time space to apply them inside the green rectangle. “After the last game, I spent two or three days analyzing all the details, when you have fewer players available for training, you have more time to study things thoroughly, we found many good aspects, along with things that need to be improved,”the Royal Club coach explained backstage during the recent break.
He continued, stressing the need for technical gradation: “this does not mean the need to make drastic changes, because it takes time to work, I can not after two days of training to ask the players to switch to playing with five defenders or four players in midfield,” Mourinho recalled the model of patience on training projects, citing the English club Arsenal and its technical director: “I read that Mikel Arteta renewed his contract with Arsenal, after spending several years there, and said that they are still at the beginning.
He linked this to the historical pressures inside the Spanish capital, saying:”Real Madrid is going through a difficult period, and he bears part of the responsibility because the team is used to winning a lot, so everything has a different size, we need time to improve some things, there are things that can be developed gradually, while others need more time.
“As a coach, I can’t just say that the match should have been played between eleven players against nine, we have to develop what we can control, we have made tactical adjustments to improve some aspects, but these changes may not be obvious to those who do not have specialized technical knowledge,”he added.
About the protection of Vinicius Jr.: “merit is important, but we must also be open, the decision should not be based on the player’s name or status, but on his current situation, we have to figure out the best way to help players, relying on merit alone also has its risks, sometimes players should be given more time, there are different ways to help a player when he is not at his best.
Speaking about Vinicius ‘ enthusiasm to return, he said: “he really wants to regain his level and be a decisive player, and he surprised me positively because he is doing well, we will find another way to help him, I respect the Real Madrid fans, but it hurts me to see a player like this not getting support, because some people are influenced by what the media say.
