The Golden Ball award is preparing to start an extraordinary chapter in its career for 2026, as the most prominent football event leaves its usual home in the Parisian “Chatelet theater”, heading for the first time in history towards the British capital London, specifically to the ancient “Palladium Theater”.
The move is not only organizational in nature, but also a historic celebration of the platinum jubilee of the establishment of the award in the cradle of modern football, as well as a special tribute to the spirit of the English legend Sir Stanley Matthews, the first player to lift this sparkling ball in 1956.
While contemporary events are held amid global lights and exceptional media glamour, the beginnings were very different, and Matthews received his modest trophy in a small room at Blackpool town hall, away from the hustle and bustle, and from the hands of the founder of the award and then editor-in-chief of the newspaper L’equipe, Gabriel hanno, in a very simple scene.
The first coronation was not far from the controversy that still accompanies the award to this day, as some critics at the time considered that Matthews ‘victory at the age of 41 was more a tribute to a 20-year career, than a reward for individual excellence that season, amid the glow of names such as Alfredo Di Stefano and Raymond Kopa in the first European Cup final, but Matthews’ subsequent career, and his athletic and physical discipline that made him continue to play until the age of 50, proved to everyone his right to lead the Golden Record, and after the expiration of 70 year after year, the most valuable individual award returns to meet again with her English roots.
