كثيرًا ما تتجاوز معركة الظفر بجائزة الكرة الذهبية حدود المستطيل الأخضر وأرقام الأهداف والتمريرات الحاسمة لتصل إلى دهاليز الضغط الإعلامي والمناورات الإدارية المعقدة.

وبدأت تفاصيل الواقعة بطلب رسمي من وكيل لاعب كان اسمه مدرجًا ضمن المرشحين للتتويج، راغبًا في عقد جلسة لمناقشة أرقام موكله وحظوظه، وسرعان ما انحرف الحوار عن مساره الطبيعي، حيث أشار فيريه إلى أن الوكيل وجه له سؤال صريح ومباشر بشأن إمكانية استغلال نفوذه وموقعه للتأثير على اختيارات أعضاء لجنة التحكيم ودفعهم لمنح أصواتهم للاعب.

وقوبل هذا العرض برفض حاسم وقاطع، مؤكدًا التزامه التام بحيادية الجائزة وعدم التدخل في خيارات المحكمين، غير أن المقابلة شهدت تطور مريب فور مغادرته الطاولة لدقائق معدودة من أجل إجراء اتصال هاتفي عاجل، فعند عودته، وجد المكان خاليًا تمامًا من الوكيل، بينما أستقر على الطاولة ظرف مغلق بعناية، ورفض فيريه فتحه تمامًا، وقام بتسليمه في الحال إلى موظفي الاستقبال دون معرفة ما يحويه في الداخل.

ورغم تكرار اللقاءات بين الطرفين في مناسبات كروية لاحقة، لم يتطرق أي منهما إلى تلك الحادثة أو طبيعة ما احتواه الظرف، ليظل ذلك المشهد أحد أكثر الأسرار إثارة للجدل في أروقة الجائزة الفرنسية، ورغم تكتم فيريه التام عن ذكر الأسماء، رجحت تقارير متطابقة أن النجم المقصود كان يلعب في الدوري الإنجليزي، والمفارقة أنه غادر الملاعب دون أن يفوز بالجائزة الذهبية طوال مسيرته.
