The Turkish preacher and researcher “İhsan Şenocak” sparked a wide wave of controversy within sports and popular circles in Turkey after his explicit call for Trabzonspor fans to completely stop chanting their famous song directed at the Egyptian star “Mohamed Salah,” warning them against invoking divine wrath by introducing religious words into football fields.
Shunokak made sharp statements addressing the club’s fans, saying: “Stop it immediately, you will bring upon us the wrath of God,” in direct reference to the chant “God, God, Mohamed Salah,” which has been resonating strongly in the stands as an expression of joy and welcome for the former Liverpool striker since his transfer to Trabzonspor. Shunokak believed that the historical and religious identity of the city of Trabzon is completely incompatible with the inclusion of religious terms and their sanctity in the context of sports cheering and matches.
The roots of the crisis lie in the verbal form of the chant, as the Turkish researcher believes that associating the name of God with the player’s name undermines the sanctity of religious texts and empties them of their spiritual meanings. He emphasized that this type of encouragement could lead to calamities and misfortunes if the sanctity of sacred Islamic words is disregarded.
On the other hand, Trabzonspor fans see the chant as spontaneous and reflective of the great status and overwhelming popularity that the Egyptian star holds among the fans, with no intention to disrespect the sacred. This opens the door for renewed discussion about the limits of expression and the religious symbols used in the chants of football fans in the stands.
